I really liked this 8-minute video on the inner workings of the NY Times Interactive Graphics Department. I had no idea they did such amazing work! This inspires me to dig around the nytimes.com site a little more.

Data Flow 2: Visualizing Information in Graphic Design*
Turning Pages: Editorial Design for Print Media*
Visual Storytelling: Inspiring a New Visual Language

Read the accompanying article here.

(* I really want these books! I saw them at the Breda Graphic Design Museum and regret not picking them up then.)

FF Chartwell is a typeface that generates graphs for you! I’ve never seen anything like it. Very impressive.

A general guide can be found here on the FontFont website. Buy the whole family for $129, or try out one font (I’d go with Chartwell Pies) for just $25.

"When you’re working and you make mistakes, particularly when you’re young, you make discoveries because you do things that are inappropriate and wrongheaded, but within the wrongheadedness you find an unexpected way to go. These things are truly the breakthroughs. You have to get bad in order to get good. You have to try a lot of things and fail in order to make the next discovery."

This book shows and explains typography like no other book I’ve seen.
